What your job will be like:

Are you looking to join a highly skilled Mechanical Engineering Group? If so, we are seeking a skilled, self-motivated individual to join our team as a Magnet Engineer. As a Magnet engineer, you will collaborate with a multi-disciplinary and diverse team of designers, technicians, engineers, and scientists in the design, procurement, fabrication, test, installation, commissioning, and maintenance of normal conducting magnet systems in our Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) and the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) project.

The Magnet Engineer will be required to give effective presentations to various audiences, write convincing proposals and reports with all necessary backup material, and defend the design at engineering design reviews or safety reviews.

In this role you will:

  • Develop requirements and specifications for normal-conducting electro-magnets to achieve required accelerator and experimental physics performance
  • Remain abreast of and consult others on technical advancements in magnet technology.
  • Design and analyze electromagnetic, structural, and thermal aspects of the accelerator magnets using engineering calculations and FEA tools such as ANSYS and OPERA.
  • Lead the procurement of magnet components and assemblies.
  • Define and implement the overall quality plan for magnet systems to include quality checks and verification tests on magnets and their components.
  • Lead a team of engineers and designers in the design, analysis, fabrication, and commissioning of electro-magnets.

Qualifications We Require:


  • Bachelor’s degree in Physics or Engineering from an accredited university and,


  • At least ten years of relevant work experience in the design, analysis, and fabrication of electromagnets.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Effective communicator.
  • Ability to work effectively with peers.
  • Data analysis and programming skills.

Qualifications We Desire:


  • A Master’s degree in a related field is preferred


  • Experience in large-scale accelerator magnet projects or facilities is highly desirable.
  • Experience in leading a project with cost and schedule responsibilities.
