What your job will look like:
Jefferson Lab is an internationally recognized nuclear physics research and development center located on a modern 160-acre campus in Newport News, Virginia. The campus is home to over 900 scientists, engineers, and support staff that design, develop, and operate advanced superconducting radio frequency accelerators and serve a 1,600-member user community pursuing discovery-class research.

The HPDF (High Performance Data Facility) Project Director will guide the efforts of intra- and inter-laboratory teams of professionals to ensure the delivery of the project from concept to completion.

In this role you will:

  • Support timely and accurate communications with DOE, Integrated Project Team, and other key stakeholders. Facilitate project communications up, down, and across engaged organizations.
  • Create project plans that inform the time, funding, and resources required for successful project completion and clearly communicate these requirements to governance entities.
  • Execute the HPDF project within the DOE approved baselines and to DOE standards for project management, such as DOE Order 413.3b; apply tailoring strategy as appropriate for Office of Science projects.
  • Plan, host, present, and ensure the successful outcome of DOE independent reviews and assessments of the HPDF project.
  • Work with a variety of technical teams, computer vendors, and construction managers to coordinate the building of first-of-a-kind user facility that includes computational system, data storage, and software and conventional facilities elements.
  • Work with the HPDF Facility Director in the development and communication of HPDF plans and budgets.
  • Support the Laboratory in the implementation and execution of JLab and DOE mission and goals.
  • Work with the Facility Director and DOE Program Manager to ensure the project and its subsequent operations have the appropriate resources and funding for success.


Qualifications We Require:
Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Management, Business, or STEM related field.

Experience:

  • 15 years of experience leading teams to accomplish highly complex technical objectives.
  • 5 or more years of experience managing technical projects with a cost of $10M or larger.
  • 5 or more years of experience managing research computing or related projects within the DOE laboratory system.
  • 5 or more years of experience managing federally funded research projects and their related financial requirements.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated natural problem-solver, solutions oriented, able to progress solutions from high ambiguity to concrete plans.
  • Demonstrated ability to negotiate high-value contracts with technology vendors.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with U.S. Government program managers.
  • Possesses exemplary communication skills and the ability to work with a broad spectrum of contributors and stakeholders to establish and achieve complex goals in a fast-paced environment.
  • High emotional intelligence (i.e. self-awareness, self-management, motivation, empathy, and social skills).
  • Able to understand and communicated complex project and funding related financial information.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Project Management Training and Certification.
  • Master's Degree Management, Business, or STEM related field.
  • 4 or more years' experience directing or managing a DOE O413.3b project.
  • 5 or more years' experience within the DOE ASCR Program Office.
