What your job will be like:

Jefferson Lab’s Engineering Division provides technical services to the entire lab to support ongoing accelerator operations and other lab initiatives. As our Lead Magnet Measurement Engineer you will provide technical leadership of the Magnet Measurement Facility (MMF). Lead the technical development of magnet measurement stands for dipole, quadrupole, and higher-order magnets. This will involve all phases of technical design including procurement of precision stages, motors, probes, and instrumentation as well as leading the coding development effort and final analysis of measurement results.

In this role you will:

  • Leadership of the Magnet Measurement Facility (MMF). This may involve leading a team of qualified staff, and providing them with clear performance goals and expectations, and ensuring that they have the necessary training, understanding and resources to complete their assigned tasks.
  • Technical development and maintenance of the DAQ System. This involves equipment identification and procurement, coordination of installation, instrumentation and programming, probe development, coding and automating analysis. This will include equipment such as hall probes, NMRs, rotating coils, circuit board probes, precision stepper motors, and precision integrators.
  • Magnet analysis. Work with project leads, engineers and scientists to specify realistic validation criteria for all types of magnets. Acceptance criteria must be tied to measurement stand capabilities or funded development efforts. Analyze, document and communicate the results of measurements, relative to acceptance criteria, ensuring that they are accomplished accurately, consistently and in a timely manner.
  • Present measurement results at conferences, workshops, and reviews.
  • Lead the maintenance and calibration of all of the data acquisition stands. In addition, maintaining and updating the DAQ software such that it is flexible enough for adaptation to projects across the lab. Look for ways to maintain reliability and, where practical, expand the technical capabilities of the MMF in a cost-effective way.
  • Work with magnet design tools such as OPERA/TOSCA and Maxwell for complex field analysis and magnet design.
  • Assist the magnet design teams in magnet modeling and maintain a relationship and understanding of upcoming requirements for the measurement lab.
  • Responsible for the overall safety performance of the MMF. This includes developing and maintaining relevant safe operating procedures, and implementing and consistently enforcing existing SURA/TJNAF environmental, health, and safety policies, procedures, and practices in all work activities being supervised. Qualifications We Require:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Physics
  • 10 years of relevant experience

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of magnetic measurement techniques, including: electro-magnetic measurement principles, 2D field mapping systems using Hall probes and NMR's, rotating coil measurement techniques and calibration, circuit board probe design and correction constant calculations, instrumentation engineering and controls, computer science and programming applications knowledge of mechanical and electronic systems.
  • Experience with magnet modelling tools such as OPERA 3D highly desirable.
