What your job will be like:

The Jefferson Lab Target Group is seeking an experienced, hands-on electronics technician to assist us as we build the next generation of targets used for scattering experiments in each of JLab’s four experimental halls. We need your help to design, fabricate, install, and maintain the electronic systems that monitor and control our targets as they operate in some of the most challenging environments imaginable: cryogenic temperatures close to absolute temperature, ultrahigh vacuum, intense magnetic fields, and extremely high radiation fields.

In this role you will:

  • Be a member of the team responsible for designing, building, and installing the target systems used in numerous electron and photon scattering experiments throughout the lab.
  • Work with scientists, engineers, and mechanical technicians to develop the instrumentation used to control and monitor the targets during experiments.
  • Be responsible for the design, construction, and installation of custom electronic chassis and wiring needed to connect the control electronics to the target system.
  • Specify the electrical power requirements for new target installations.
  • Troubleshoot and repair faulty electrical and electronic instrumentation.
  • Provide technical support for staff, users, and college students conducting research at Jefferson Lab.

Qualifications We Require:

Education:

  • High school

Experience:

  • 5 years or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Good oral and written skills (e.g. email, memos, explanations, drawings), including the ability to effectively explain and document work
  • Effectively plan and complete work on multiple, simultaneous tasks without direct, day-to-day supervision
  • Work effectively as a member of a team and coordinate work with outside groups and divisions such as Experiment Hall Work Coordinators and Jefferson Lab ESH&Q
  • Proficiency in the use of standard electronic/electrical test equipment (multimeters, oscilloscopes, clamp meters, spectrum analyzers, etc.)

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Knowledge and understanding of electrical safety standards NFPA 70 and 70E
  • Virginia Journeyman Electrician License
