Jefferson Lab's Accelerator division is seeking a Staff Scientist II. As an Accelerator Scientist, you will collaborate with a multi-disciplinary and diverse team of scientists, engineers, technicians, and designers in the design and commissioning of a state-of-the-art Energy Recovery Linac (ERL) to cool ion beams in the Electron-Ion Collider being built at Brookhaven National Laboratory. You will also work to derive the specifications and detailed physics of this advanced accelerator, and work with the ERL team to develop the detailed physics and engineering designs. Come and join our team!

In this role you will:

  • Use simulation codes to determine system performance and subsystem requirements.
  • Specify magnet, power supply, collimator, and RF stability performance requirements.
  • Estimating the effects of misalignments and mis-powerings on the machine performance.
  • Develop detailed commissioning procedures and explore potential failure mechanisms.
  • Work with engineers to develop detailed specifications for all sub-systems.
  • Monitor fabrication, and update models and requirements as needed during construction to ensure that top-level specifications can be met.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Can work effectively with peers

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Experience with electron beam simulation codes is required and a basic expertise in electro-magnetic physics is essential.
  • Experience working as a mentor with students
