What your job will be like:
We are seeking a self-motivated individual to join the Mechanical Engineering Group as a Mechanical Designer for SRF cryomodules for EIC. This position calls for someone who has a proven track record of generating complex designs such as magnets, structures, testing equipment, mechanisms, machine components, vacuum equipment, electromechanical devices, piping systems, and cryostats. The designer will be tasked to turn concepts and ideas into working assemblies and systems with independent thinking. The designer will be required to plan work assignments and maintain schedule and may be required to supervise other designers. In addition, the designer may be tasked to follow projects through purchasing, fabrication, and installation.

The Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) is the next large-scale Department of Energy nuclear physics user facility to be built in the United States. It will be hosted by Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) and is expected to start operation within the next 10 – 12 years. The EIC Project received Critical Decision CD-1 in June 2021 initiating the engineering and design phase. Jefferson Lab is a major partner in the EIC Project and is providing significant contributions to the overall project management as well as the design and construction of RF systems, cryogenics systems, electron injector and storage ring electro-magnets, and experimental detector systems.

As a T/D-II, you will:

  • Design EIC SRF Cryomodules under the direction of an engineer and lead designer.
  • Demonstrates intermediate knowledge of design and drafting techniques with Siemens NX and AutoCAD software to create complex models and drawings of components and assemblies.
  • Must have practical experience producing orthographic mechanical and fabrication drawings.
  • Must understand and appropriately apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing.

As a T/D-III, you will:

  • Maintain all functions and responsibilities of a T/D II
  • Be a lead designer of SRF Cryomodules while providing direction to more junior designers.
  • Demonstrates high degree of competency in design and drafting techniques with Siemens NX and AutoCAD software to create complex models and drawings of components and assemblies.

Qualifications We Require:

T/D II:

Education & Experience:

  • Associates Degree plus 3 years relevant experience, or
  • High School Graduate with 5 years relevant experience, or
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience in the drafting and design field.

T/D III:

Education & Experience:

  • Associates Degree plus 7 years relevant experience, or
  • High School Graduate with 9 years relevant experience, or
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience in the drafting and design field.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Performs work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to identify and resolve problems of moderate complexity.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.

Qualifications We Desire (T/D II & T/D III):

  • Experience in designing cryogenic systems, vacuum systems, and/or cryostats
  • Experience in machining and/or metal fabrication
  • Experience in process plant and equipment design
