What your job will be like:

The Jefferson Lab Scientific Computing Department is part of the Jefferson Lab CST (Computational Sciences and Technology) Division and is responsible for the support of scientific computing projects at the laboratory. In addition, the Jefferson Lab is a member of the Geant4 international collaboration and contributing to its development, validation and maintenance. We are seeking applicants for a position in Computational Physics and Computer Science (Staff Computer Scientist II), to support the lab’s hadronic and nuclear physics research programs with emphasis on Geant4-based detector simulation. The successful candidate will closely interact with staff members in the Scientific Computing department and the researchers in the experimental programs of Jefferson Lab and Electron Ion Collider project, to further existing mission needs and to meet future challenges of accurate and efficient detector simulation. Moreover, this position provides excellent opportunities for career development in both physics and computer/computational science in a world leading research establishment.

Essential Skills & Job Functions

  • Carry out research and development in the area of Geant4-based detector simulation with emphasis either on improving Geant4’s physics models or on architecture specific performance optimizations targeting upcoming heterogeneous architectures such as GPUs.
  • Participate in the development of a “common turn-key simulation application” usable for all Jefferson Lab current and near future experiments in addition to the development of the simulation code for ePIC experiment at Electron-Ion Collider.
  • Join the Geant4 international collaboration and take part in its development, validation and maintenance as well as its user-support and tutoring activities.
  • Some domestic and international travels are required.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelors in Computer Science, Physics or related field is required.
  • 3 years of experience of programming in C++


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of nuclear physics experiment and related software.
  • Proficient in C++.
  • Preference will be given to candidates who have knowledge and experience in the following areas:
    • Experienced with modern software development methods and tools.
    • Developing parallel software using pthreads/OpenMP and MPI.
    • Heterogeneous computing utilizing accelerator architectures using OpenCL and/or other programming paradigms.
    • Participation in high performance computing projects.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential.


DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • PhD in Nuclear Physics or High Energy Physics.
  • Programming experience for scientific applications utilizing Python, OpenCL, CUDA is a plus.
  • Previous development experience in Geant4.
  • Experience in other detector/radiation simulation engines such as MCNP, Fluka, PHITS, Penelope.
