What your job will be like:
We are seeking self-motivated individuals to join the Mechanical Engineering Group as a Mechanical Engineer. As a mechanical engineer, you will collaborate with a multi-disciplinary and diverse team of engineers, scientists, designers, and technicians in the design, analysis, procurement, fabrication, test, installation, and commissioning of technical systems on the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) partnership project.
The Mechanical Engineer will be required to give effective presentations to various audiences, write convincing proposals and reports with all necessary backup material, and defend the design at engineering design reviews or safety reviews.
The Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) is the next large-scale Department of Energy nuclear physics user facility to be built in the United States. It will be hosted by Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) and is expected to start operation within the next 10 – 12 years. The EIC Project received Critical Decision CD-1 in June 2021 initiating the engineering and design phase. Jefferson Lab is a major partner in the EIC Project and is providing significant contributions to the overall project management as well as the design and construction of RF systems, cryogenics systems, electron injector and storage ring electro-magnets, and experimental detector systems.

EIC Technology Areas:

  • Normal conducting electro-magnets
  • Superconducting electro-magnets
  • Accelerator beamlines, vacuum systems, and diagnostics
  • Detector systems and support structures
  • Cryogenic plant equipment and distribution systems
  • Superconducting Radio Frequency (SRF) Cryomodules

In the SE-II role you will...

  • Be a team member with other engineers and designers in the development of systems and components in one or more of the EIC technology areas. Apply previous experience in design and analysis of complex systems.

In the SE-I role you will...

  • Be a team member with other engineers and designers in the development of systems and components in one or more of the EIC technology areas utilizing basic or theoretical principles and creative analytical techniques typically acquired in academic studies.

Either role will…

  • Develop requirements and specifications for technical systems to achieve required accelerator and experimental physics performance.
  • Design and analyze electromagnetic, structural, and thermal aspects of the technical systems using engineering calculations and FEA tools such as ANSYS.
  • Design and develop peripheral system elements such as vacuum vessels, pressure vessels and piping, support structures, cooling water system designs, heat transfer, and vibration analysis
  • Present technical status reports, defend designs at engineering design and safety reviews.
  • Serve as the responsible technical representative for the design, procurement, and fabrication of components and systems.
  • Document the final design, fabrication, installation, commissioning, and maintenance of assigned systems.

For SE-II:
Qualifications We Require:


  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an accredited university.


  • At least four years of relevant work experience in the design, analysis, and fabrication of complex mechanical systems.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • A Master’s degree in a related field is preferred.
  • Experience in large-scale accelerator projects or facilities.
  • Experience in design, fabrication, and testing of related systems.

For SE-I:

Qualifications We Require:


  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an accredited university.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • A Master’s degree in a related field is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities for SE I and SE II:

  • Effective communicator.
  • Ability to work effectively with peers.
  • Data analysis skills.
