The Center for Injectors and Sources (CIS) is responsible for expanding the capability of the CEBAF photoinjector - to deliver high average current beams of highly polarized electrons, with excellent operational lifetime - and to provide the exceptional “parity quality beams” necessary for the MOLLER parity-violation experiment to be successful. Work involves the development of high voltage photoemission electron guns and low energy electron beamlines, improved ultrahigh and extreme high vacuum techniques, novel photoemission cathodes, sophisticated lasers producing optical beams with RF time structure, and fundamental understanding of depolarization mechanisms in various semiconductors. CIS is also responsible for the photo-gun and low-energy polarized beam line at the UITF, and supports significant research in achieving EIC deliverables.
Working with the scientific and technical staff of the Center for Injectors and Sources, the incumbent in this position will participate in characterizing spin-polarized photocathodes which operate in today’s very high voltage photo-guns. The incumbent will spend much of his/her time in the group’s vacuum lab, building a load-locked vacuum system and micro-Mott polarimeter for the spectral characterization of photocathode quantum efficiency and spin-polarization; and also at the Upgraded Injector Test Facility – a facility to commission new equipment, and for performing experiments that shed light on limitations of photo-gun technology. In support of photocathode development, the incumbent will participate in the CEBAF Injector Upgrade commissioning activities, to evaluate materials and processing techniques for producing polarized beam in a 200 kV photo-gun, and then with first polarized beam commissioning of the new injector. This work includes characterizing the injector setup and photocathode performance necessary to provide high intensity polarized beams for the MOLLER experiment with small helicity-correlated beam charge and position differences. The incumbent will also assist with operations of the CEBAF photoinjector, including maintenance and commissioning activities during accelerator shutdowns.
A Ph.D. in Physics, Applied Physics, or a closely related engineering discipline and specific training is required. A demonstrated experimental physics background in one or more of the technologies specific to polarized electron sources or electron polarimetry, e.g., ultrahigh or extreme high vacuum technology, high voltage DC photoemission electron gun design, low energy electron beamline design, electron beam diagnostic development, surface science, specialized lasers, sophisticated data acquisition systems like those required for parity violation experiments, etc., is also required. The demonstrated ability to translate laboratory developments into functional systems on operating accelerators is a strong plus.
We are looking for someone with enthusiasm, a thinkerer, who enjoys “owning” a test stand, using it and improving it. A clever and energetic group member will certainly find many ways to contribute to interesting projects that include: assessment and elimination of field emission from cathode electrodes, optimization of the high voltage electrostatic design of new photo-guns, improved vacuum, improved mechanical design of sophisticated “load-locked” vacuum chambers, detailed assessment and prioritization of many parameters that influence photo-gun lifetime and photocathode development.
