What your job will be like:

Experimental Hall B is seeking a motivated senior mechanical designer to join our team to play a vital role in the design efforts at our world-class research facility. You will have an opportunity to lead design efforts, work with designers from other groups and perfect your design skills. Hall B consists of multiple targets, and 16 different particle detector systems to detect sub-atomic particles, all housed in a 98-foot diameter building. The computer -aided design used in Hall B is Siemen’s NX CAD software and Teamcenter PDM.

In this role, you will:

  • Develop models and drawings to show the equipment used for each experiment.
  • Integrate new detectors into the existing space in the Hall, so they will function with the other detectors.
  • Use layout sketches to design components to fit into the space allotted.
  • Use constraints in assemblies to maintain the correct relationship between parts.
  • Tracks projects from conceptual designs through fabrication and installation in the Hall
  • Produce accurate, simple and cost-effective fabrication documentation (3D modeling, assembly and orthogonal drawings) using NX/Teamcenter and AutoCAD.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprint drawings, component specifications, and technical data sheets.
  • Convert concepts and ideas into working assemblies and systems with independent thinking.
  • Completes highly complex tasks.
  • Normally responsible for the planning and completion of multiple tasks simultaneously.

Qualifications We Require:

Education and Experience:

  • High School Graduate with 12 years relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Able to provide input to schedule development, identifies conflicts and develops solutions.
  • Demonstrates high level skills, knowledge and ability in one technology trade or specialty.
  • Knowledge of theory, design, and techniques used at component and system levels.
  • Intermediate skills, knowledge and ability in other technologies
  • Significant latitude in prioritizing and choosing work methods.
  • Extensive knowledge of 2D and 3D CAD software and data management systems
  • Prior experience in machining and/or metal fabrication is a plus.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate with a variety of disciplines both verbally and in writing.
